Country Of Origin | Italy |
History and Background | The Avelignese comes from Italy and is one of the country’s most populous and widespread breeds. It is obvious that they share an ancestor with the Austrian Haflinger and often people interchange the two. However, they are a different breeds with distinct characteristics. A common breed in Italy, the Avelignese was developed in Italy over a century ago and recognized as a breed since 1874. Their name comes from Avelengo which has been an Italian region since 1918. There is no disputing the shared blood between this breed and the Haflinger, however there are characteristic differences (the Avelignese is slightly heavier) probably due to different breeding practices between Italy and Austria. |

Characteristics | Despite its small size, the Avelignese is an ideal mount and light draft horse. It displays its thick and heavy mane, which has a golden chestnut colour, proudly; its tail, meanwhile, is white or flaxen in colour. Its head shows a lot of Arabic influence, though it often has white markings on its face. The horse's body, on the other hand, is chunky and muscular, with short, strong legs, and resilient hooves -- all of which make it perfectly suited for farming or drafting in mountainous terrains. |
Personality and Temperament | Because of its good work ethic, the Avelignese is considered one of the most reliable horse breeds. |
