Place of Origin and Range | The Mexican Red-Legged tarantula is a terrestrial tarantula native to the western faces of the Sierra Madre Occidental and Sierra Madre del Sur mountain ranges in Mexico. |
Description | This spider has a dark-coloured body with orange patches on the distal half of each. The second element of the legs is orange-red. Following molting, the colours are more pronounced. The dark portion is very black while the orange-red portions will be far more on the reddish side. |
Adult Size | Can grow up to 4 in(10cm) |
Accommodation | These spiders live in a desert type habitat. Be sure to have enough substrate to allow burrowing. A mild temperature with a basking spot at 21- 25'C (69 - 77'F). Typically they are kept in a deep tank with 25 to 30 cm (10-12 inches) of substrate. |
Lifespan | Can live up to 20 years for females. Less for males. |
Feeding / Diet | Its diet consists primarily of earthworms, and other insects. Occasionally a pinkie mouse will be taken. |
Other Considerations | When startled these spiders will shed hairs to cause itching on predators. Rinse off with water. Do not rub off, it will cause itching. Be sure to keep away from your eyes. |
