Place of Origin and Range | The American bullfrog often simply known as the bullfrog in Canada and the United States. |
Description | The dorsal (upper) surface of the bullfrog has an olive-green basal colour, either plain or with a mottling and banding of greyish-brown. The ventral (under) surface is off-white blotched with yellow or grey. There is often a marked contrast in colour between the green upper lip and the pale lower lip. The teeth are tiny and are useful only in grasping. The eyes are prominent with brown irises and horizontal almond-shaped pupils. The tympani (eardrums) are easily seen just behind the eyes and the dorsolateral folds of skin end close to them. The limbs are blotched or banded with grey. The forelegs are short and sturdy and the hind legs long. The front toes are not webbed, but the back toes have webbing between the digits with the exception of the fourth toe which is unwebbed. |
Adult Size | Can grow up to 8 in ( 20 cm ) |
Accommodation | They need a large (at least ten-gallon) terrarium and do best with a substrate that will hold some humidity, such as commercial shredded bark or coconut husk bedding, or untreated topsoil on the floor of their terrarium. A shallow water dish should be included. Captive frogs should not be handled any more than necessary; when necessary, clean gloves should be worn. . A source of UV light is not required, and ambient temperature of 72 to 77 °F (22 to 25 °C) is sufficient. |
Lifespan | Can live up to 20 years |
Feeding / Diet | These frogs are insectivores, eating earthworms, fish, and other small insects such as crickets. One study suggested the frog selects prey not by its size, but according to its activity level, with the most active prey being the most frequently eaten. |
Other Considerations | Clean cage often to prevent red-leg from dirty water. |
