History and Background The Bhirum Pony or Nigerian Pony is a dwarf breed from northern regions of Nigeria. This breed is thought to be a descendant of the little known Poney Mousseye of Cameroon.
This pony is thought to come from the Barb which was brought to Nigeria by Nomads. These animals were bred to local ponies & the resulting animal became the Bhirum Pony.
The Nigerian is a large pony breed, although they are occasionally referred to as small horses. These animals are incredibly versatile and can resist the heat of their environment.
Use Today Riding horse, Pack horse, Light draft
Height 14 hands tall (56 inches, 142 centimeters)
Colour Any colour
Characteristics Head is plain with straight profile
Ears are small and alert
Neck is short and shoulder sloping
Chest is deep
Short back with sloping Barb croup
Legs are strong, but sometimes hindquarters are poorly developed
