British Longhair

Origin And History The background story of this breed is that the original longhaired British cat through interbreeding with imported longhairs, e.g. from Turkey, was developed into the Persian and became increasingly massive and extreme in type with long, thicker fur than the early Persians. During the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the Persian was considered the longhaired analogue of the British Shorthair. During the later part of the twentieth century, a shorthaired version of the modern Persian was developed and was called the Exotic Shorthair; this was very different from the British Shorthair. It was therefore proposed that a longhaired cat of the British type be reintroduced into the cat fancy.
This breed is a long-haired version of the British Shorthair and British Semi-longhair. Much like those cats, the British Longhair has a broad, square head. It is also known as the Britannica in European countries and the breed is not yet well recognized in the UK itself.
Personality The British Longhair Cat is known for how well it can adapt to new environments. While the British Longhair Cat is not a social butterfly when it comes to making new human friends, it is certainly not a hermit either. It will make new human friends when introduced to them. Owners have said that this cat is very independent, but does like to interact with them on rare occasions. This cat is a great breed for owners that have busy lives. Owners have said that their British Longhair Cat spends a lot of time with their children. They have also stated that the cat remains loving no matter how aggressive the children’s actions may be towards it. Owners have said that it took their British Longhair Cat a long while to warm up to their dogs. They also said that during this warm up time, the cat was sometimes hostile towards the dog. This cat enjoys being loving. Owners can expect this cat to snuggle up with them after a long day out. The British Longhair Cat will often play when its owner initiates playtime with it, but it does not initiate playtime very often. This cat has a lower level of energy. It may be active for a short time during the day, but owners should not expect much more than that. Learning routines and some moderate training should be expected for the British Longhair Cat because they are smarter than the average cat.

Physical Attributes

Most British Longhair Cats have a short length tail, which helps compliment their overall body structure. This is another breed that has rather medium sized eyes, but this is not the most predominate feature of the British Longhair Cat breed; because it has so many other qualities that draw one’s attention.
