Donskoy

Origin And History The Donskoy is a hairless cat breed of Russian origin. This breed started in 1987 with the discovery of a hairless cat in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don by cat breeder Elena Kovaleva. It is not related to the better known hairless breed of cat the Sphynx, also known as the Canadian hairless, whose characteristic hairlessness is caused by a recessive gene, whereas the Don hairlessness is caused by a dominant gene.
The Donskoy was first officially recognized by World Cat Federation (WCF) in 1997, and by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2005. The standard of points describes the cat as being medium-sized and muscular, with large ears, almond shaped eyes and distinctive long, webbed toes. They require frequent grooming, in spite of their lack of coat. Over-bathing can cause the skin to become very oily.
The Peterbald breed was originally created by crossing Donskoy with Siamese and Oriental cats to create a hairless cat of Oriental type. Mating between Donskoy and Peterbald are no longer permitted.
Personality When it comes to entering a new home, the Donskoy does not need much time to adjust. It should begin to act normal within a few days after a move, or when you first bring it to your home. The Donskoy seems to like to meet new people. It will almost always be the first to introduce itself to a new person. The Donskoy can not get enough interaction. Owners of this cat should expect to see it along their side most of the day. Unike the Colorpoint Shorthair Cat, Nebelung Cat, or Dragon Li Cat; this cat loves to be around children. It enjoys spending its time as a playtime companion for the owner’s children. This breed is ideal people that already own dogs, but would also like to have a cat. The Donskoy gets along very well with dogs. The Donskoy shows more affection than other cat breeds. It enjoys showing love to its owners. The Donskoy breed is quite playful. Owners should have a stash of fun cat toys available for this cat breed. This breed has a moderate energy level. They can be very active compared to other breeds, but not all the time. Owners have been successful in training this cat because the Donskoy is a very intelligent breed.

Physical Attributes

Appearance The Donskoy has been known for its small size and this has been a deciding factor for many owners of this breed. Its build is best described as petite, and tiny. Because the Donskoy breed is a small sized cat breed it often weighs between 6 lbs (2.7 kg) to 12 lbs (5.4 kg). This cat would fit well in a small sized home. The Donskoy has a heritage with depth. The breeding of its pedigree has led to a fur coat (or lack-there-of) that is commonly described as stark, barren, and unique. Their fur (or skin) may come in colours such as rubber bald, flocked, velour, and brush; which can make them very unique among their peers. Most Donskoy's have a short length tail, which helps compliment their overall body structure. This is another breed that has rather small sized eyes, but this is not the most predominate feature of the Donskoy breed; because it has so many other qualities that draw one’s attention.
Health This is a cat breed that does not have health issues very often. While many cat breeds do have some mild health issues, common ones for the Donskoy – Don Sphynx Cat breed are Diarrhea, Eye Problems, and Tapeworms. People with cat allergies, are taking a risk by being in contact with Donskoy – Don Sphynx Cat breed. It may cause an allergic reaction.
