Place of Origin and Range | Found in New Guinea and the Cape York Peninsula of north eastern Australia. |
Description | Adults vary from dull to bright green with irregular small whit spots or a thin white dorsal line with white to yellow underbellies. Newborns are brick red or yellow; they shed a few times during a process called onotgeny to get their adult colours. |
Morph Patterns Available | Yes |
Adult Size | Can grow 4 -6 feet (1.2 - 1.8m) |
Accommodation | With this snake in particular, height is a must. Turn a your tank vertical so that branches can be places standing anchored in place for climbing. Keeping in mind you'll need a heat source for a basking spot at 80'F(27'C) and a dish big enough for you snake to soak in. High humidity with multiple daily mists. A typical rainforest habit will be best. |
Lifespan | Can live 12+ years |
Feeding / Diet | Like most snakes a Green tree python can eat mice, rats, and some newborns prefer lizards; depending on the size of your snake and the availability of feed. |
Breeding | Being oviparous, they tend to lay 1-25 viable eggs per clutch. Breeding has never been reported from the wild, however in captivity eggs are incubated and protected by the female. Colour change for red juveniles has not been observed in the wild. |
Other Considerations | May need to "tease feed" these snakes.(wiggle feed in front of the snake, head at a safe distance with tongs). Snakes are relatively hardy low maintenance animals when kept in the correct environment, and require little day to day care other than feeding and cleaning out the tank as required. However, like all animals, they can still become sick or injured despite our best intentions to prevent this. |
