Origin & History Croatian and Slovene breeders created the Istrian Coarse-haired Hound in the mid-19th century by crossing the French Griffon Vendeén with the Istrian Shorthaired Hound, a smooth-haired hound developed from both sight hounds and scent hounds. The breed first took part in a conformation show in Vienna in 1866.
The dog is still used for hunting fox, rabbits, hare, and wild boar.
Personality The Istrian Coarse-haired Hound has been bred primarily for hunting rather than as a companion, it tends to be willful and hence more challenging to train than many other breeds.

Care Requirements

Health There are no known breed-specific health concerns.
Grooming The coat of the Istrian Coarse-haired Hound should be brushed about twice a week with a firm bristle brush. The coat needs some stripping, but is not hard to learn how to do. The hairs should be hand plucked occasionally depending on the condition of the coat. It is usually thinned in the spring and fall. Bathe only when necessary. The hair of the coat should be as hard as possible, but must not look untidy. Check the ears to make sure they are clean. The feet should be checked after the dog has been out working. This breed is an average shedder.
Exercise An active hunting hound, the Istrian Coarse-haired Hound needs regular exercise, ideally with plenty opportunities to hunt. They are quiet and calm indoors.
Other Considerations The Istrian Coarse-haired Hound is not recommended for apartment life. It is relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. This is a breed that needs some space. It is still kept primarily as a hunting dog rather than as a pet.
