Mexican Milk Snake

Mexican Milk Snake

Place of Origin and Range It is native primarily to north eastern Mexico in Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, but it can be found as far north as the United States, in south western Texas.
Description The Mexican Milk Snake has distinct red, black and cream coloured banding, which sometimes leads to it being called a coral snake mimic. In some localities the cream coloured banding can be more yellow, and in other areas it can be more orange.
Morph Patterns Available Yes
Adult Size Can grow up to 3 feet(0.9m)
Accommodation Dry woodland, grassy plains or savannah. To avoid injuries anchor any rocks in the vivarium before you add the substrate. You will want to include a large dish for bathing and soaking; to improve shedding. Always include a day basking spot at 80F(27C). Along with multiple hides this snake likes to hide in termit mounds in the wild.
Minimum 2 x 2 x 4 feet for an adult.
Lifespan Can live 15-20 years
Feeding / Diet Like most snakes the Children's python can eat mice, rats, and chicks; depending on the size of your snake and the availability of feed. Most will readily prefer rodents.
Other Considerations The coral snake's red and yellow bands are adjacent, while the milk snake's red and black bands are adjacent. Distinguishing between the two, therefore, is often taught with the mnemonic device "red touches/on black, friend of Jack; red touches/on yellow, kill a fellow". Snakes are relatively hardy low maintenance animals when kept in the correct environment, and require little day to day care other than feeding and cleaning out the tank as required. However, like all animals, they can still become sick or injured despite our best intentions to prevent this.
