Plains Garter Snake

Place of Origin and Range Found from central North America, extending from Alberta south to New Mexico and east to Indiana. In built-up areas of the Chicago area, it has been observed in abandoned buildings, trash heaps, and vacant lots.
Description The Plains Garter Snake has either an orange or yellow stripe down its back and distinctive black bars on its lip. The stripe normally starts at the head and continues all the way to the tail tip. Lateral stripes are located on the third and fourth scale rows and are normally a greenish-yellow colour. Its belly is grey-green with small dark spots along the edges. Most have distinctive light yellow spots on the top of the head.
Adult Size Can grow up to 28in(71cm)
Accommodation The Plains Garter Snake is commonly found in meadows and prairies adjacent to water sources, such as marshes, streams, and ponds.
Lifespan Can live 5+ years
Feeding / Diet It is one variety of rat snake, feeding primarily on small mammals, birds & bird eggs. Availability is the key. Most snakes will readily eat proper sized rodents(mice, rats).
Other Considerations Snakes are relatively hardy low maintenance animals when kept in the correct environment, and require little day to day care other than feeding and cleaning out the tank as required. However, like all animals, they can still become sick or injured despite our best intentions to prevent this.
