Red Jungle Fowl
Origin | The Red Jungle Fowl was first domesticated at least five thousand years ago in Asia, then taken around the world, and the domestic form is kept globally as a very productive food source of both meat and eggs. |
Size | This species can grow up to 24 in(60 cm) |
Lifespan | Can live 5+ years |
Noise | Can be quite noisy. Roosters have loud calls. |
Characteristics | Males make a food-related display called "tidbitting", performed upon finding food in the presence of a female.Male and female birds show very strong sexual dimorphism. Males are much larger; they have large red fleshy wattles and comb on the head and long, bright gold and bronze feathers forming a "shawl" or "cape" over the back of the bird from the neck to the lower back. The tail is composed of long, arching feathers that initially look black but shimmer with blue, purple and green in good light. The female's plumage is typical of this family of birds in being cryptic and having evolved for camouflage as she alone looks after the eggs and chicks. She also has no fleshy wattles or comb on the head. |
Abilities | Can be used for meat and production of eggs. |
Interaction/Time Requirements, Diet, Supplies Needed | Red jungle fowl lives mainly on the ground in open forest or on land under cultivation where they forage for berries, grains but also prey on snakes, lizards, and small rodents. These birds especially like to roost in tree tops at sunset. Because of the sheer size of these birds, they are most often kept in a large fenced yard during the day and locked away in a large aviary with perches at night to protect from predators. Always have a large dish or fountain accessible for the birds to drink. Aviaries can be bought ready to assemble or you can make your own. |
