Sanshu

Country of Origin Japan
Weight Two varieties;
Large: 44 - 55 lbs. (20 - 25 kg)
Small: 30 - 40 lbs. (13.5 - 18 kg)
Height (at withers) Two varieties;
Large: 20 - 22 in. (51 - 56 cm)
Small: 16 - 18 in. (40.5 - 45.5 cm)
Coat The coat is short and coarse.
Colour Colours are red, gray, tan, white, pied, black and tan or salt and pepper.
Litter Size 3 - 6 puppies
Life Span 10 - 12 years
Origin & History The Sanshu was developed in 1912 in Japan. It is believed to be a cross between the Japanese Aichi (an ancient dog) and the Chinese Chow Chow. The Sanshu is very popular in its native Japan.
Personality The Sanshu is a sensitive dog, eager to please. Obedience training should be done with a positive, kind hand. They are very affectionate and bond closely with the family. The Sanshu is an extremely clean dog. They are very loyal to their humans.

Care Requirements

Health Hip/elbow dysplasia, cancer, skin allergies and sensitivities, digestive issues, hypothyroidism, distichiasis (ingrown eyelashes), cherry eye, bloat/gastric torsion, obesity .
Grooming Regular brushing will rid the coat of dead and loose hairs.
Exercise The Sanshu needs moderate but regular exercise to stay in shape. It should be taken for long daily walks.
Other Considerations The Sanshu will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. It is moderately active indoors and will do best with a large yard.
