Serengeti

Origin And History The Serengeti is a breed of domestic cat, first developed by crossing a Bengal (domestic and wild hybrid) and an Oriental Shorthair. Recognized and registered by The International Cat Association (TICA), no other first generation crosses can be registered as Serengeti. From the Bengal × Oriental cross came the first foundation Serengeti. Breeders then worked with the cat to produce a cat that resembles the breed profile set by TICA. Created by Karen Sausman of Kingsmark Cattery in California in 1994, the breed is still in the development stages, but the ultimate aim is to produce a cat that looks similar to a serval, without using any recent wild cat blood. (Bengal cats originate from hybridization of leopard cats and domestic cats. Most Bengal cats used in Serengeti breeding programs are many generations removed from these origins and possess few genetic contributions of the wild forbear except alleles affecting coat colour.) Serengetis are spotted cats, with long legs and very large, round tipped ears. They have a long neck which blends with the base of the skull without tapering. Because the Bengal stock is a hybrid cat, the Serengeti is also classified as a hybrid.
They are recognized by TICA in tabby, ebony silver, ebony smoke and solid black. A group of breeders in the UK are currently working towards getting TICA to also recognise the snow spotted (aka lynx-point) variety.
The tabby is known as the brown-spotted in the UK. However spots can be black or dark brown on a tan, light beige or gold background. The silver has black spots on a silver background. Ghost spotting can sometimes be seen on the solid black version.
Personality Serengeti Cat breeds do not show any character change when entering a new environment. They adapt almost immediately to their new environment. The Serengeti Cat really loves to make new human friends! It has no problem showing love and affection to everyone it meets! Owners that are looking for a daily companion will love this breed. The Serengeti Cat prefers to have plenty of human companionship its life. Unlike the British Shorthair Cat, Sokoke Cat, or Manx Cat; this cat loves to be around children. It enjoys spending its time as a playtime companion for the owner’s children. Their owners that also have dogs can expect to see it interacting well with the dogs. The Serengeti Cat really loves dogs. The Serengeti Cat really enjoys snuggling and showing affection. Owners get plenty of love from this cat! This cat breed loves to play so much that it will often wake its owner up, at the start of each day, for playtime. Energy is not a problem for the Serengeti Cat. At times it can appear to have an endless amount. This cat develops habits and routines, and can also be trained because they are highly intelligent.

Physical Attributes

Appearance The Serengeti Cat has been known for its medium size and this has been a deciding factor for many owners of this breed. Its build is best described as long legs, large, and strong. Because the Serengeti Cat breed is a medium sized cat breed it often weighs between 8 lbs (3.6 kg) to 22 lbs (10 kg). This cat would fit well in a medium sized home! The fur (or lack-there-of) of the Serengeti Cat is often described as short, fine, and tough. This is because this Serengeti Cat breed has a strong bloodline! Their fur (or skin) may come in colours such as black, silver, and tabby; which can make them very unique among their peers. The short length tail found in most of the Serengeti Cat breed is believed to help the cat with balance, grace, and agility. Their small sized eyes, that are common among the Serengeti Cat breed, create a unique look that their owners find adorable.
Health Owners should not expect many problems with their Serengeti Cat. This is a cat breed that does not have health issues very often. Health issues are common among domesticated animals. This cat breed may be susceptible to Diarrhea, Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease, and Vomiting. Allergic reactions are not common, but may occur in people with cat allergies that come near the Serengeti Cat breed.
