Water Snakes

Place of Origin and Range The various species of water snakes occur naturally over most of the central and eastern United States and into parts of adjacent Canada and Mexico.
Description As a rule water snakes are generally large, stout bodied snakes. Background colour is usually dull browns, greys and greens, water snakes may be patternless, banded, blotched, saddled, or striped, depending on the species.
Morph Patterns Available Yes
Adult Size Can grow 2-5 feet(0.6-1.5m)
Accommodation Woodland or shore line. Plenty of branches for climbing just above the water dish. Leafy plants will provide the required humidity and hides. You will always want to include a LARGE dish for bathing and soaking in. Always include a day basking spot at 80'F(27'C). Along with multiple hides. Minimum 2 x 2 x 4 feet for an adult.
Lifespan Can live 10-15 years
Feeding / Diet These snakes eat frogs and fish mostly. Fish fillets cut into strips and supplemented with calcium and a multivitamin may also be fed.
Breeding This species is ovoviviparous, with females giving birth to one to 16 live young and possibly as many as 20. However, litters of six to eight are the most common. A few accounts exist that describe females defending their newly born litters.
Other Considerations Different snakes are called water snakes. Most are colubrids. "Water snake" is also sometimes used as a descriptive term for any snakes that spend a significant time in or near fresh water. They should not be confused with sea snakes, which live primarily or entirely in marine environments. Snakes are relatively hardy low maintenance animals when kept in the correct environment, and require little day to day care other than feeding and cleaning out the tank as required. However, like all animals, they can still become sick or injured despite our best intentions to prevent this.
